Clayton unbeaten on 99 as Queensland reach 5-202, trail Victoria by 105
The Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and Victoria remains finely balanced after the second day at the Gabba in Brisbane. Queensland finished the day on 5-202 in reply to Victoria's 307, still 105 runs behind with five wickets in hand. Jack Clayton is unbeaten on 99 and Hayden Kerr is not out on 14. The morning session on day three is likely to decide the direction of the match.
Clayton will resume on the brink of a Sheffield Shield century. He faced the final over of the day from part-time spinner Ollie Peake and managed only four runs before stumps were called on Sunday. That left him stranded on 99, meaning he will have to wait overnight for a chance to complete three figures. It is a mentally demanding position for any batter, especially with the team still trailing.
Clayton's innings has been the backbone of Queensland's reply. The No.4 faced 191 balls and struck eight fours, holding the innings together after early wickets. His strike rate was not aggressive, but his patience and composure were exactly what the home side needed. Queensland will require him to convert his score into a bigger innings and guide the lower order towards a first-innings lead.
Queensland's innings began badly. Victorian captain Will Sutherland brought himself into the attack and bowled Hugh Weibgen with his first delivery. At the end of the same over, he had Hugo Burdon caught by Marcus Harris at third slip. Queensland were suddenly 2-33 and under pressure. Sutherland's spell changed the complexion of the game and gave Victoria an early advantage.
Clayton and opener Angus Lovell then steadied the innings with an 85-run partnership for the third wicket. Lovell made 36, but Matt Hennig struck with the first delivery of his spell to trap him lbw. It was Hennig's first Sheffield Shield wicket. Two overs later, Liam Blackford took a sharp catch at bat-pad off Hennig and Lachlan Hearne was out for two.
Queensland's troubles continued when Jimmy Peirson skied spinner Todd Murphy to Sutherland at mid-wicket, leaving the home side at 5-174. Clayton, however, remained firm and found support from Kerr. The pair navigated the remaining overs to stumps without further loss, adding 28 runs together. Their unbroken stand has given Queensland hope heading into day three.
Clayton's effort is part of a strong season for him. This is his fourth half-century across the Shield and one-day competitions. His ability to absorb pressure and bat long has been valuable for Queensland, and his team will need more of the same on the third morning. With five wickets in hand and a deficit of 105, Queensland need 106 runs to take the lead.
Victoria's first innings ended at 307. They resumed on 9-282, and Mitch Swepson took his second wicket when he dismissed Hennig for four, leaving Sutherland unbeaten on 43. Cameron Gannon was the pick of the Queensland bowlers with 5-66, while Jem Ryan took three wickets. Swepson finished with two wickets.
Victoria's bowling attack, led by Sutherland, Hennig, Murphy and Peake, will be aiming for early breakthroughs on day three. Sutherland's decision to bowl himself paid immediate dividends, and Hennig's first-ball success showed his ability to strike under pressure. Peake's final over prevented Clayton from reaching his century on day two, a small but potentially significant moment in the match.
The first session on Monday will be crucial. If Clayton and Kerr can survive the early overs and build a partnership, Queensland could take a first-innings lead. If Victoria strike early, the momentum will shift back to the visitors. Clayton's wicket remains the key, and both sides know it. The match is evenly poised, and the morning session should provide plenty of drama.
