Clayton stranded on 99 as Gabba Shield clash hangs in the balance
Jack Clayton will resume on 99 on day three at the Gabba, with Queensland 5-202 in reply to Victoria's 307 after an absorbing second day. Clayton faced only four runs off the final over from part-time spinner Ollie Peake before stumps, leaving him one short of a century and facing a restless night.
The innings underlined his form this season — a fourth half-century across the Sheffield Shield and one-day competitions. Operating at No.4, he faced 191 balls and struck eight fours, anchoring an innings that repeatedly threatened to unravel at the other end. Hayden Kerr is unbeaten on 14.
Victoria's captain Will Sutherland changed the game with the ball, bowling Hugh Weibgen with his first delivery and then having Hugo Burdon caught by Marcus Harris at third slip later in the same over, reducing Queensland to 2-33. Clayton and Angus Lovell rebuilt with an 85-run stand for the third wicket before Matt Hennig, recalled to the attack, struck with his first ball to trap Lovell lbw for 36 — his maiden Shield wicket.
Two overs later Liam Blackford took a sharp bat-pad catch off Hennig to dismiss Lachlan Hearne for two, and when Jimmy Peirson skied Todd Murphy to Sutherland at mid-wicket, Queensland were 5-174. Clayton and Kerr survived to stumps, and the Monday morning session now shapes the result.
Victoria resumed on 9-282 and were bowled out for 307, Mitch Swepson taking his second wicket when he dismissed Hennig for four. Sutherland finished unbeaten on 43, while Cameron Gannon claimed 5-66 and Jem Ryan took three wickets.
